The Hobbit Is Coming!

Fabulous news!!! Peter Jackson, NewLine Cinema and MGM have hammered out a deal that will allow Jackson's version of The Hobbit to finally hit the big screen!

And not only that, a "bridge" film linking The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings is also part of the deal. The second film would be based on stories from the Appendices portion of LOTR. This could include The White Council, the driving out of Sauron from his stronghold in Mirkwood, Aragorn's wanderings in the south of Middle-earth, the search for Gollum, Aragorn and Arwen's meeting and so on. Too many treasures, to be sure, but we have faith in PJ's vision. We just hope he can find the time to direct the films as well as produce them.

NaNoWriMo update

I did it! I finished my 50,000 word quota a day early, so I am now an official NaNoWriMo winner! Woohoo!

The working title is Wedding Bell Blues, and it's a chick lit mystery set in the Southwest. Now comes the scary part: going back and actually reading what I wrote!

The novel is only about two thirds done, so I still have to finish the rough draft. Then it's polish, polish, polish!

Thanks to all of my friends for their patience and support during this month long trial by fire!

The Road Goes Ever On Redux

Hi!

I've been off in a distant land of late, but since I just signed up for a writing exercise called NaNoWriMo (nanowrimo.org), I thought I should update this.

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to complete a 50,000 word "novel" in the month of November. Not everyone reaches their goal, but it's all about the chase, isn't it?

And so, back to the word processor--only 38,000 words left to go!

In the Footsteps of Tolkien travel program

Lembas for the Soul author Catherine Kohman will present her travel program, In the Footsteps of Tolkien, at 1 p.m. on January 10, 2007 at The Library Station in Springfield, Missouri. The travelogue will feature ancient and medieval sites in England which may have inspired the Professor to write The Lord of the Rings. I will be signing copies of Lembas for the Soul: How The Lord of the Rings Enriches Everyday Life at The Library Center, Springfield, Missouri, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9th. I will also have copies of my award-winning novel, The Beckoning Ghost, available as well.

Minnesota Fan Convention Cancelled

To my dismay, I recently learned the SF-3 Science Fiction/Fantasy convention scheduled for the Labor Day weekend in Bloomington, Minnesota has been cancelled. It appears the organizers didn't receive enough registrations to hold the event.

I was really looking forward to meeting other LOTR fans, not to mention hearing Billy Boyd (Pippin) and John Noble (Denethor) speak. What a disappointment for all involved--the organizers and potential participants alike.

Let's hope that there will be an ORC fan event in California this coming January, as there have been in recent years. Keep watching this space and theonering.net website for more news.

SF-3 convention news from Celevon

I'm going to be one of the guest speakers at SF-3, "Minnesota's Premier Multi-Media and Pop Culture Festival". The science fiction/fantasy convention is being held in Bloomington, Minnesota over the Labor Day weekend. Billy Boyd (Pippin) and John Noble (Denethor) from the LOTR films are scheduled to attend, as well as Daniel Falconer from WETA Workshops. (Check the links for more information about the program.) Hopefully I will have a chance to present the LOTR guests with signed copies of Lembas for the Soul so they can read more about the positive influence LOTR has had on fans' lives.

Bloomington (a suburb of Minneapolis) is my original home town, so that makes the trip to the convention even more exciting. And don't forget the Mall of America (the largest mall in the U.S.) is also located there, so if you're a shopaholic, it's a must!

A surprise from Alan Lee

Last year when I was in England, I met Alan Lee, noted Tolkien illustrator and conceptual artist for the LOTR films. I told him when Lembas for the Soul came out, I would send him a copy. So a few months ago I mailed off a copy to him in Devon.

A short while ago I opened my PO box to find an airmail package from the UK, addressed to me in a distinctive, calligraphic hand. The customs form was signed by Alan Lee!

I was on my way to lunch with my friend Carolyn, another LOTR fan who helped put the Lembas book together. I decided to wait to open it, though it was hard to resist peeking at it. When I got to the restaurant, I set the package on the table and saw her eyes widen. We opened it together.

Inside the package were the bookplates I'd asked Alan to sign for me (they were for my hardcover LOTR editions). He sent a handwritten letter thanking me for the book and sending his regards to the other Lembas authors. He also included a wonderful pencil sketch of The White Tree (which is the name of my book imprint, White Tree Press). He inscribed it for me with his thanks. My very own Alan Lee sketch!! I almost did The Precious Dance right there in the restaurant!

The curious thing was that the windswept tree in the sketch reminded me of a pen & ink design for a book cover of The Return of the King I once did for a literature class assignment. Of course, Alan's sketch was much more elegant and evocative. (I'll post a copy as soon as I can get it scanned.)

It was such a pleasure to share Lembas with someone who contributed so much to the success of the LOTR films, and who has long been admired for his beautiful artwork. If you haven't seen his LOTR
sketchbook, you should--it's amazing.

This is the place where Lembas for the Soul authors and others who are interested in the works of JRR Tolkien can share their thoughts and news.

In Lembas for the Soul: How The Lord of the Rings Enriches Everyday Life, 50 fans reveal how their love for LOTR has transformed their lives.

On Saturday, December 3, 2005, a good number of the contributing authors for Lembas for the Soul will be signing the book at The Lord of the Rings Exhibit at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana. The afternoon signing will be an informal "launch" party for the book, and all interested fans are invited to stop by and meet the authors.

Some of the authors will be travelling across the country, even from overseas, to participate in the event. So why not plan your visit to see the exhibit (before it leaves North America) for the first weekend in December and meet these talented authors as well?
